Question: I am wondering if I need to suggest a another exit/egress door as clouded from the the exiting electrical room is required. The existing MDP is rated for 1200amps but I am not sure it is more than 6'-0" wide. I have attached a PDF for reference.Thank youDan Craven

Okay, Dan, I've reviewed your PDF. Based on the information you provided and the documentation, here's a breakdown of the code requirements and my assessment of your situation

Key Considerations Based on the National Electrical Code (NEC)
NEC 110.26(C)(2) Large Equipment

Switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, or motor control centers that are installed in dedicated electrical spaces and are rated 1200 A or more and over 6 ft wide must have two means of egress, no more than 25 ft apart.

Analysis of Your Situation
1. Equipment Rating

You stated your MDP is rated for 1200A.2.

Equipment Width

You are unsure if the equipment is more than 6 ft wide.

This is the critical piece of information you need to determine.
3. Dedicated Electrical Space

The rule applies if the equipment is installed in a dedicated electrical space.

Decision Tree for Requiring a Second Egress
1. Is the equipment rated 1200A or more? YES (Confirmed by you)2. Is the equipment wider than 6 feet? UNKNOWN (Critical Information Needed)
IF YES

Proceed to step 3

IF NO

A second means of egress is NOT required, unless required by local authorities.3.

Is the equipment installed in a dedicated electrical space?
YES/NO (Need more information) IF YES

Proceed to step 4

IF NO

A second means of egress is NOT required, unless required by local authorities.4.

Is the clear distance to the nearest egress less than 25ft?
YES/NO (Need more information)Recommendations1. Measure the Equipment Width

The

absolute first step
is to
accurately measure the width of the MDP. Measure from the furthest outboard points of the equipment enclosure.2. Determine Dedicated Space

Determine if the equipment is located in a dedicated space. This space must comply with 110.26(E).
3.

Clear Distance to Nearest Egress

Determine the distance between the center of the width of the equipment and the nearest egress.4.

Local Codes

Check with your local electrical inspector or building department. They may have stricter interpretations or additional requirements beyond the NEC.5.

Consult an Engineer (If Necessary)

If you are still unsure after gathering the above information, it would be prudent to consult with a licensed electrical engineer for a definitive assessment.

Important Considerations Regarding Egress Doors
Door Swing

Ensure the door(s) swing in the direction of egress and are equipped with panic hardware if required by the building code.

Clearance

Maintain the required clearances in front of and around the equipment, as specified in NEC 110.26(A) and (B).

Obstructions

The path of egress must be clear of obstructions.*

Accessibility

The second egress point must be readily accessible and not blocked by other equipment or storage.

Summary

You need to definitively determine the width of the 1200A MDP and if the rules from 110.26(E) apply. Based on that measurement, along with the rules from 110.26(C)(2) and 110.26(E), and by following the decision tree above, you can make an informed decision about the need for a second egress door. Always err on the side of safety and code compliance. When in doubt, consult a licensed electrical engineer. Flag for review
