Question: The seperation between live parts is 6". The switchgear is 15kV.The bus work is factory buswork, but the terminations are made in the field.Should the connections be insulated? Is it a violation of Table 490.24 if it is not (based on paragraph 490.24)?490.24 Minimum Space Separation. In field-fabricated in-stallations, the minimum air separation between bare live con-ductors and between such conductors and adjacent groundedsurfaces shall not be less than the values given in Table490.24. These values shall not apply to interior portions orexterior terminals of equipment designed, manufactured, andtested in accordance with accepted national standards.

Should the connections be insulated?

Yes, it is good practice to insulate connections on buswork, even if they are factory-made. Insulation helps to prevent accidental contact with live parts and reduces the risk of arcing.

Is it a violation of Table 490.24 if it is not insulated?

No, it is not a violation of Table 490.24 if the connections are not insulated, provided that the minimum air separation distances specified in the table are maintained. However, it is important to note that Table 490.24 only applies to field-fabricated installations. Factory-made buswork is not covered by this table. Flag for review
