Question: Hi All,I'm looking for a single conductor ferrule that I need for terminating stranded copper wire but with smaller copper sleeve diameter to fit into a device terminal. The device in question I believe was designed with terminations to accept a bare conductor, but per Spec, we need to use a wire ferrule to make terminations. Are there any vendors that you could recommend? This application is for low voltage control wiring.Thank you,EE

Okay, I understand. You need single-conductor ferrules with a smaller-than-typical copper sleeve diameter specifically to fit into terminals designed for bare wire. Here's a breakdown of the challenges and some vendors to investigate

Challenges:
Standard Ferrules are Bulky

Standard ferrules are designed to provide a secure crimp and often have a copper sleeve diameter larger than a bare wire of the same gauge. This is by design, to provide sufficient metal for a proper crimp.

Terminal Design

Terminals designed for bare wire often have limited space and rely on the screw/clamp directly contacting the conductor.

Spec Requirements

Your specification mandates ferrules, removing the option of using the bare wire.

Key Considerations When Searching

Wire Gauge

Knowing the exact wire gauge (e.g., 18 AWG, 22 AWG) is critical.

Terminal Dimensions

If possible, measure the internal diameter of the terminal where the wire will be inserted. This is crucial to finding a compatible ferrule.

Crimp Tool

Ensure the chosen ferrule is compatible with your existing crimp tool or that you can acquire a suitable tool. Some smaller ferrules may require a different crimping method.

Insulation Type/Color Coding (If Important)

Ferrules often come with color-coded insulation sleeves. Determine if this is a requirement for your application.

UL Listing/Certifications

Check if the ferrule needs to be UL listed or meet other specific industry standards.

Vendor Recommendations (with potential search strategies)

I'll present vendors and suggest keywords to use on their websites. Keep your wire gauge and desired sleeve diameter in mind as you search. Call the vendors directly if you can't find what you need online.1.

Weidmuller

Why

Weidmuller is a major manufacturer of terminal blocks, connectors, and wiring accessories. They offer a wide range of ferrules.

Search Terms

"Wire ferrules," "insulated ferrules," "uninsulated ferrules," "small diameter ferrules," "miniature ferrules," "slim ferrules". Try specific wire gauges like "22 AWG ferrule," and then refine by physical dimensions if possible.

Look For

Check their product catalogs for ferrules that specify a reduced barrel diameter. Pay attention to the technical drawings.

Key Feature to Look For

Look for language describing how the ferrule is suitable for "tight spaces" or "high density" terminal blocks.2.

Phoenix Contact

Why

Similar to Weidmuller, Phoenix Contact is a leading supplier of industrial automation and connectivity components.

Search Terms

Same as Weidmuller, but also try "compact ferrules."

Look For

Focus on ferrules specifically designed for use in their own terminal blocks, as they might have variations optimized for space constraints.3.

WAGO

Why

WAGO is well-known for its spring-cage termination technology and also produces ferrules.

Search Terms

Same as Weidmuller, consider adding "WAGO ferrule" to narrow the search.

Look For

Review the ferrule specifications very closely, focusing on the outside diameter after crimping.4.

Panduit

Why

Panduit offers a broad range of wiring and cable management solutions, including ferrules.

Search Terms

"Ferrules," "wire terminations," "small ferrules."

Look For

Panduit often has detailed product documentation, including dimensions.5.

Molex

Why

Molex is primarily a connector company, but they also make some wire termination products.

Search Terms

"Ferrules," "wire end sleeves."

Look For

They may have ferrules designed for specific Molex connectors, which might have tighter dimensional requirements.6.

Electrical Distributors (e.g., Digi-Key, Mouser, Newark)

Why

These distributors carry products from multiple manufacturers. It's a good way to compare specifications side-by-side.

Search Terms

Use the same search terms as above, filtering by manufacturer (Weidmuller, Phoenix Contact, etc.). Pay close attention to the product datasheets.

Benefit

Often have detailed product specifications and downloadable datasheets.7.

Specialty Ferrule Manufacturers

Search online for "custom ferrule manufacturer" or "specialty ferrules." You might find smaller companies willing to produce a ferrule to your exact specifications. This will likely involve higher minimum order quantities and longer lead times.

Important Tips for Your Search

Download Datasheets

Always download the datasheets for potential ferrules. The datasheet will provide the most accurate dimensions.

Request Samples

Once you've identified a few promising ferrules, request samples to test in your application. This is the best way to ensure compatibility.

Contact Technical Support

Don't hesitate to contact the manufacturer's technical support team. Explain your application and ask for their recommendations.

Crimp Test

After selecting a ferrule, perform pull-out tests to ensure a reliable connection.

Example Search Strategy on Weidmuller's Website:
1. Go to Weidmuller's website.
2. Search for "wire ferrules."3. Filter by "Insulated Ferrules."4. Look for options to further filter by size or dimension. If you don't see that, browse the available ferrules, opening datasheets and looking for outside diameter (OD) specifications of the copper sleeve after crimping.
5. If you still can't find what you need, use their "Contact Us" option to speak to a technical representative. Explain you need a ferrule with a reduced OD copper sleeve for use in terminals designed for bare wire.Good luck with your search! Let me know if you have any other questions. Flag for review
