Question: Would this a be a code violation to completely cover an electrical outlet to reduce sound transmission?I'm looking at this product and I don't see UL or other lab listing.

Yes, covering an electrical outlet completely, even with a soundproofing product, is generally a code violation and a significant safety hazard.

Here's a breakdown of why: Fire Hazard

Electrical outlets generate heat, especially under load. Covering them prevents proper ventilation and heat dissipation. This can lead to overheating, melting of insulation, and potentially a fire.

Electrical Shock Hazard

Tampering with or obstructing access to outlets increases the risk of accidental contact with live electrical components. In an emergency situation, you could be prevented from quickly unplugging an appliance.

Code Violations

The National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes require clear access to electrical outlets for safety and maintenance. Covering them violates these codes.

Product Listing

As you noted, the lack of UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or similar independent lab listing is a major red flag. Reputable electrical products undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet safety standards. Using unlisted products can void your insurance and create significant safety risks.

Instead of completely covering the outlet, consider these safer and code-compliant alternatives for soundproofing

Outlet Soundproofing Pads/Gaskets

These are thin foam pads that fit
behind the outlet cover plate. They help to seal the gaps around the outlet box and reduce sound transmission. Make sure they are listed and designed for this specific use.

Acoustic Caulk

Seal any gaps around the outlet box with acoustic caulk.

Double Drywall and Green Glue

If you're renovating, adding a layer of drywall with Green Glue (a sound-deadening compound) can significantly reduce sound transmission through the walls.

Soundproof Curtains or Blankets

While not directly related to the outlet, these can help dampen sound in the room and reduce noise transmission through windows and doors.

Important:
When working with electrical outlets, always turn off the power at the circuit breaker. If you're not comfortable working with electricity, consult a qualified electrician. Flag for review
