Question: I have medical center which has critical branch, equipment branch and life and safety branch.Question would critical branch have to comply with NEC 2017 Article 700? I dont see anything in NEC 2017 Article 517 about that.

You're right to question that! Here's the breakdown

No, the critical branch in a healthcare facility does NOT directly comply with NEC 2017 Article 700 (Emergency Systems).

Here's why: Article 517 is King for Healthcare

NEC Article 517
Health Care Facilities specifically governs the electrical wiring and systems in healthcare facilities. It outlines the requirements for the essential electrical system (EES), which includes:

Life Safety Branch

(Required to comply with Article 700, as per 517.30(C)(1))

Critical Branch

Equipment Branch

517 Specifies Requirements

Article 517 dictates the specific performance and wiring requirements for the Life Safety, Critical, and Equipment Branches. It doesn't say the Critical Branch must comply with Article 700.

Life Safety Branch is the Focus of Article 700

The Life Safety Branch is designed to power equipment essential for the safety of patients and staff during a power outage, such as emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, and certain communication systems. Article 700 addresses the installation, operation, and maintenance of emergency systems, and 517.30(C)(1) mandates that the Life Safety Branch comply with it.

In Summary

The Critical Branch is designed to power equipment essential for patient care such as patient beds, monitoring systems, etc., and is governed by Article 517. However, the Life Safety Branch is designed to protect the health care facility's occupants and is governed by Article 700.

Important Considerations

Local Amendments

Always check with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). They may have adopted amendments to the NEC that could impact the requirements for the Critical Branch.

Performance Criteria

Even though the Critical Branch isn't directly subject to Article 700, Article 517 has stringent requirements for reliability, transfer times, and testing of the essential electrical system.*

Design Intent

The overall design philosophy should ensure that the Critical Branch provides a reliable and stable power source for patient care during a power outage.

In conclusion, while the Critical Branch is a vital part of the essential electrical system in a healthcare facility, it is directly governed by NEC Article 517, not Article 700.
