Question: What would you use to go from pvc 80 to pvc coated rgs? It's a transition to a pvc coated rgs elbow if that matters. Would imagine whether straight run or elbow transition it's same part. Thanks.
You're right, the fitting is the same whether you're transitioning to a straight run of PVC coated RGS or to a PVC coated RGS elbow. The correct fitting to use is a PVC Coated Conduit Hub.Here's why and what to consider: Purpose
PVC coated conduit hubs are designed to provide a watertight, secure connection between a PVC conduit system (in this case, PVC 80) and a threaded rigid metal conduit system (your PVC coated RGS).
How they work
One end is designed to solvent weld onto the PVC schedule 80 conduit. The other end has an internal thread that will screw onto the external thread of the PVC coated RGS.
PVC Coating Compatibility
You need to ensure the hub is also PVC coated. This is critical to maintain the integrity of the PVC coating system and prevent corrosion where the two conduit systems join.
Proper Installation
Use the correct PVC cement and primer for your PVC 80 conduit when attaching it to the hub. Apply anti-seize compound (suitable for the environment) to the threads of the PVC coated RGS before threading it into the hub. This will make future disassembly easier and prevent seizing. Torque the connection to the manufacturer's recommended specification to ensure a watertight seal, but without overtightening.
Sizing
Match the hub's size to the corresponding conduit sizes (e.g., 1" PVC 80 to 1" PVC coated RGS).
Manufacturer
Choose a reputable manufacturer known for high-quality conduit fittings. Common brands are Ocal, Crouse-Hinds, and Thomas & Betts. Make sure the brand you choose is compatible with the PVC coating system you are using.
Why not other options? Reducing Bushings/Adapters
While standard reducing bushings or adapters can connect PVC to metal conduit, they typically don't provide the necessary environmental protection for a PVC coated RGS system, and are not rated for direct burial. They also won't provide a watertight seal.*
Standard PVC Couplings
PVC couplings are for joining PVC to PVC, not PVC to RGS.
In Summary
Use a
PVC Coated Conduit Hub of the correct size to transition from PVC 80 to PVC coated RGS. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation, including proper cementing, thread lubrication, and torque specifications. Flag for review
