Question: We have a couple of fellows replacing ballasts in our office. All of them. I got to talking with them and asked if they ever used Wagos. I got a blank look. Then I described them and they said "Oh, you mean suitcase connectors!" That was a new one for me. Any other slang terms out there for them? (I do fully expect this thread to go off the rails at about 0.1 milliseconds at Mach 3, but let's do the best we can).
That's a funny anecdote! "Suitcase connectors" is definitely a new one for Wago connectors. Here are a few other slang or informal terms you might hear, though the usage will vary greatly by region and electrician: Push-in connectors
This is fairly descriptive, and some electricians might use it generically, even if they're not specifically Wago brand.
Click connectors
Similar to above, emphasizing the sound they make when connecting.
Lever nuts/connectors
Again, focused on the specific type, but sometimes used as a general term.
Wire nuts 2.0/Smart wire nuts
Implying they are an improvement over traditional wire nuts.
Euro-style connectors
Referring to their origin.
Cheater nuts
Sometimes used with a negative connotation, implying a shortcut or less reliable method.*
The good stuff: Said endearingly by people who appreciate the efficiency of Wago connectors. It's important to remember that slang can be highly localized. What one electrician calls something in Texas might be totally different from what someone in New York calls it. The best way to avoid confusion is to use the proper terminology! Flag for review
