Question: Hi can you make a connection on the load side of the meter to feed a panel that will be install in a garage? If so which article section allos this. I know that feeder and branch circuits taps have special rules. I also know connections ahead of the main ocpd isn’t permitted unless is special conditions (pv). Im just not sure if it applies to my situation
Okay, let's break down the situation and the relevant code considerations for tapping off the load side of your meter to feed a garage panel.
Understanding the Situation
You're essentially asking if you can install a subpanel in your garage by tapping into the wires coming out of your electric meter (on the "load" side) but before they reach your main service panel.
General Rule: Tapping on the Load Side of the Meter is Normally Allowed Load-Side Tap Feeder
This is permissible as long as you install the feeder (cable) properly and apply all the required overcurrent protection requirements outlined in 240.21(B).
Key Considerations and Code References1. Overcurrent Protection is Required
Article 240.21(B)
Feeder Taps. This is the most important section. It specifically addresses how you can tap a feeder (like the wires coming from your meter to your main panel) to supply a new overcurrent device and panel.
240.21(B)(1-5) Details
It is important to note that 240.21(B) has several sections to follow to properly protect your conductors. The most common method is to select a conductor based on the size of the overcurrent protection device you choose in your new panel.2.
Proper Installation is required
Install conductors in a raceway or wiring method approved for the use. (Article 300) Install a proper grounding system. (Article 250)Example Scenario
Let's say your service conductors coming from the meter to your main panel are rated for 200 amps. You want to install a 60-amp subpanel in your garage.1. Physical Tap
You would need to physically tap (using approved connectors) into the existing service conductors between the meter and your main panel. This is usually done in a junction box suitable for the environment.2.
Conductor Size
Your conductors going from this tap to the 60A overcurrent device in your garage must be rated for 60A or higher (after applying appropriate ampacity adjustment factors for temperature, etc.).
Important Cautions and Reminders Local Codes and Inspections
Always consult your local building codes and electrical inspectors before beginning any electrical work. They may have specific requirements or interpretations of the NEC. Your work must be inspected.
Qualified Electrician
Electrical work can be dangerous. It's strongly recommended that you hire a qualified and licensed electrician to perform this installation. They will know the local codes, ensure the work is safe, and provide you with documentation.
Permitting
You'll almost certainly need an electrical permit for this type of work. Your electrician will handle this.
Coordination with Utility
You may need to coordinate with your utility company if the tap requires them to disconnect power to the meter.
In Summary
Yes, tapping on the load side of the meter to feed a garage panel is generally possible under the NEC, provided* you strictly adhere to the requirements of NEC Article 240.21(B) regarding feeder taps, and ensure all other wiring meets the code for the situation. However, it's complex work requiring careful planning, proper materials, and code compliance. Engaging a qualified electrician is the best way to ensure safety and compliance. Flag for review
