Question: We have 1200a ATS. When we try to simulate power outage by turning off breaker and have generator start the breaker turns itself back on to normal power on its own. Any idea what could be happening ?
Let's troubleshoot why your 1200A Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is switching back to normal power automatically during a simulated power outage. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and diagnostic steps
Understanding the Basic ATS Operation
Normal Operation
Under normal conditions, the ATS is connected to the utility (normal) power source.
Power Loss Detection
The ATS continuously monitors the voltage and frequency of the utility power. If it detects an outage (voltage drop, frequency deviation, or complete loss of power), it initiates a transfer sequence.
Generator Start
The ATS sends a start signal to the generator.
Generator Stabilization
The ATS waits for the generator to reach stable voltage and frequency.
Transfer to Generator
Once the generator is stable, the ATS switches the load from the utility power to the generator power.
Return to Normal
When the utility power is restored and stable for a predetermined time, the ATS switches the load back to the utility power, and then stops the generator (usually after a cool-down period).
Possible Causes & Troubleshooting Steps
We need to analyze each step of the sequence to pinpoint the problem.1. ATS Settings & Configuration
Transfer Delay
This is the most likely culprit. Many ATS units have adjustable time delays. Utility Power Failure Delay
How long does the ATS wait after detecting a loss of utility power before starting the generator? If this delay is too short, and you're manually switching off the breaker and then immediately having the generator start, the ATS might see the utility power reappear (when you throw the breaker back ON, even briefly) and immediately transfer back.
Utility Power Return Delay
How long does the ATS wait after utility power is restored before transferring back from generator power?
This is the one to focus on. If this delay is set too low (or even to zero), the ATS could be immediately sensing the utility power is back and switching back. Action
Check the ATS settings for both "Utility Power Failure Delay" and, especially, "Utility Power Return Delay". Increase the "Utility Power Return Delay" to a reasonable value (e.g., 5-15 minutes). This will give the generator sufficient time to stabilize and run before the ATS switches back. Consult the ATS manual for how to adjust these settings. Voltage and Frequency Thresholds
The ATS uses these thresholds to determine if the utility and generator power are "good" or "bad". If these are not properly configured it can cause problems. It is less likely but possible these are set wrong so that the ATS believes power has returned even if it's not fully stable.
Sensitivity
If the senstivity settings are set to high on the ATS, a slight "bump" in the power signal (a blip when you turn off the breaker) can be seen as acceptable power.2.
Testing Methodology Issues
Brief Power Interruption
You mentioned turning off the breaker. Is it possible there's a brief moment where power is restored while you're performing the switch-off and switch-on process?
Test Properly
To properly test this, turn off the breaker. Allow the generator to fully start and the ATS to switch over. Then, leave the breaker off for at least 15-30 minutes. Then, turn the breaker back on to simulate return of power. Does it transfer back immediately then?3.
Generator Issues
Voltage/Frequency Stability
Is the generator actually reaching stable voltage and frequency before the ATS attempts to transfer? If the generator is having issues with voltage regulation or frequency control, the ATS might be seeing erratic signals.
Generator Warm-Up
Is the generator set to warm up before accepting the load? If the generator accepts the load to quickly it can lead to unstable power and the ATS will switch back to main power.
Action
Check generator voltage and frequency readings during the test with a multimeter.4.
ATS Hardware/Software Problems
Faulty ATS
Although less likely, the ATS itself could be faulty. Internal relays, control boards, or sensors might be malfunctioning.
Software Glitch
Try power-cycling the ATS (carefully, following the manual's instructions). Sometimes a software glitch can be resolved with a reboot.
Corrupted Memory
If the ATS stores its settings in memory, there's a small chance that memory is corrupted. In this case, you'll need to reprogram the ATS (if possible) or replace it.5.
Wiring Issues
Sensing Wire Problems
The ATS relies on sensing wires to detect the presence and quality of utility and generator power. Check that these wires are properly connected and not damaged.
Troubleshooting Steps in a Logical Order
Review ATS Manual
Thoroughly review the ATS manual. It should contain detailed information on operation, settings, troubleshooting, and safety precautions.2.
Check ATS Settings
Carefully examine and document all the ATS settings, paying close attention to: Utility Power Failure Delay Utility Power Return Delay Voltage and Frequency Thresholds3.
Adjust Power Return Delay
Increase the "Utility Power Return Delay" to at least 5-15 minutes and retest.4.
Confirm Stable Generator Power
During the test, use a multimeter to monitor the generator's voltage and frequency at the ATS terminals. Verify that it reaches and maintains stable values before the ATS transfers.5.
Check Generator Logs
Check if the generator has any error or fault codes on its display screen, it could be related to the problem.6.
Inspect Wiring
Visually inspect all wiring connections to the ATS, generator, and utility power source. Look for loose connections, corrosion, or damage.7.
Power Cycle ATS
Try power-cycling the ATS (if appropriate) to see if it resolves a temporary software glitch.8.
Consult a Qualified Electrician
If you've exhausted these troubleshooting steps and are still experiencing the problem, consult a qualified electrician or ATS technician. They have the expertise to diagnose and repair complex electrical systems. They will have the tools and knowledge to properly test and diagnose the ATS and generator.
Safety Precautions
Work with Electricity Safely
Always follow proper safety procedures when working with electrical equipment. De-energize circuits whenever possible.
