Question: Who has taken the commercial electrical inspector test on ICC. Is it similar to the master electricians exam? When I took my masters exam it was 100 questions 5 hours and had to pass with 75% or better. Open book code book only.I see the inspector test is 80 questions 3.5 hours.Studying now and want to be completely prepared so any insight from those who took it would be appreciated.I used Mike holts study guide for my master test and passed masters.
Okay, let's break down the ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector exam and compare it to the Master Electrician exam, along with some study strategies.
Similarities to Master Electrician Exam
Code-Based
Both exams heavily rely on the National Electrical Code (NEC). You must be intimately familiar with its articles, tables, and sections.
Open Book (Code Book Only)
You'll be allowed to use the NEC. Knowing how to efficiently navigate the code book is crucial.
Calculation Questions
Both exams likely contain calculation-based questions (e.g., voltage drop, conductor sizing, conduit fill, motor calculations, etc.).
Conceptual Understanding
It's not enough to just know where a code section is; you need to understand why the code is written that way and how it applies in different scenarios.
Differences from Master Electrician Exam
Focus
The Master Electrician exam emphasizes installation. The Commercial Electrical Inspector exam emphasizes inspection and enforcement. You will be applying the code as an inspector.
Application of Code
As an inspector, you might be given a scenario and asked to determine what violations exist, or how to correctly perform an inspection.
Administrative Aspects
The inspector exam also covers administrative aspects of inspections, plan review, legal aspects, and job site safety responsibilities.
Question Format
The questions on the inspector exam will test your ability to: Identify code violations in a given scenario. Determine the correct code section that applies to a specific situation. Understand the proper inspection procedures. Make judgments about code compliance based on the information provided.
Key Differences Summarized
| Feature | Master Electrician Exam | Commercial Electrical Inspector Exam
Primary Focus | Installation practices, circuit design | Inspection, enforcement, code compliance determination || Question Style | Design and problem-solving related to electrical systems | Identifying violations, applying code in inspection scenarios |-------------------|---------------------------------------------------------|------------------------------------------------------------------
