Question: Would a receptacle in a upper cabinet of a kitchen for a microwave need a GFCI? The outlet is with in 6’ of the sink but it is not servicing the counter top and it’s not along the counter top

The 2023 NEC, Section 210.8(A)(7), requires GFCI protection for receptacles within 6 feet of the outside edge of a sink. The key point here is that the requirement isn't just about countertop receptacles. It's about any receptacle within 6 feet of the sink. Even though the receptacle is in an upper cabinet and serves a dedicated microwave, it still falls within the 6-foot zone.

Therefore, according to the 2023 NEC, the receptacle in the upper cabinet for the microwave would indeed need GFCI protection. Flag for review
