Question: Can't get a fast enough answer back from suppliers...and haven't installed busway in a long time. Is there a ball-park for how much you expect to pay per foot for 400 amp copper busway? Here are the details I have:3 phase, 3 wire with internal ground (not grounded enclosure), 400 amp, 480vThe run is about 250 feet, with the final 100 feet installed as bus-plug with (20) 30 amp plugs for EV chargers.I'm good on labor and material count, but everyone says "they'll get back to me" on price, and I'm looking for at least a ballpark I can give the GC now. Thanks in advance!
Okay, I understand the situation. Getting a quick ballpark for busway pricing can be tough. Since prices fluctuate significantly, and I don't have access to real-time supplier quotes, I can only provide an estimated rough range based on my knowledge and publicly available information. Treat this as a very preliminary number. Here's a ballpark estimate for 400A copper busway, 3-phase, 3-wire with internal ground, 480V, for your specific application
Straight Busway Sections (First 150 feet)
Expect to pay between
$200 - $350 per foot. This is a broad range, and the actual cost could fall outside of it. Factors affecting this price are manufacturer, lead time, and how they factor in the cost of the couplings needed to connect the 10 foot sections. Plug-In Busway (Final 100 feet with 20 plugs)
Plug-in busway is significantly more expensive due to the complexity of construction. You should anticipate in the range of
$450 - $700 per foot. This cost also includes the bus plugs. Bus Plugs
Expect to pay around
$300-600 each for 30 amp bus plugs, depending on the brand and features.
Calculation for your Project (Rough Estimate)
150 feet of straight busway: 150 ft $275/ft (midpoint) = $41,250 100 feet of plug-in busway: 100 ft $575/ft (midpoint) = $57,500 20 bus plugs: 20 plugs $450/plug (midpoint) = $9,000
Total Material Estimate: $107,750Important Considerations and Caveats
Copper Prices
The price of copper is volatile. Significant changes in copper prices can drastically impact the busway cost. Monitor commodity prices.
Manufacturer
Eaton/Cutler Hammer, Siemens, and Schneider Electric (Square D) are major players. Prices will vary between them. Get quotes from multiple manufacturers.
Lead Times
Busway, especially with specific plug configurations, often has significant lead times (weeks to months). This impacts pricing.
Location
Your geographic location influences pricing due to shipping costs and local market conditions.
Accessories
Don't forget essential accessories:
End Feed Units
You'll need a way to connect the busway to your power source. Factor in the cost of the end feed unit.
Elbows and Fittings
If your run isn't straight, you'll need elbows and other fittings.
Hangers and Supports
Proper support is crucial. The type and quantity of hangers will impact cost.
Grounding
Ensure you have the correct grounding connections.
Project Size/Volume
Sometimes larger projects get better pricing per foot.
COVID-19 and Supply Chain Disruptions
Ongoing supply chain issues can significantly impact lead times and prices.
Increased Inflation
Material costs in general have seen significant increases, especially for electrical equipment.
Recommendations
Push Your Suppliers Harder
Explain the urgency to your suppliers and emphasize that you need a preliminary quote for budgeting purposes. Give them a firm deadline.2.
Get Multiple Quotes
Contact at least 2-3 suppliers for pricing.3.
Check with Reputable Electrical Distributors
Distributors often have better pricing and stock availability than going directly to the manufacturer.4.
Consider Aluminum Busway
Aluminum busway is generally less expensive than copper, but it might not be suitable for all applications. Discuss the pros and cons with your engineer.
In summary: I strongly recommend getting real quotes from suppliers as soon as possible. Use this ballpark estimate ($107,750) as a very rough starting point, but be prepared for potentially higher prices. If it were my project, I'd assume a minimum of $125,000 for the material. You can adjust that, but be prepared to adjust. Good luck! Flag for review
