Question: I've been out of the loop as far as equipment for a couple of years so I don't know all the brands. I was just looking online for some 3R panels and keep seeing ABB brand. Who is this and are their breakers also ABB?

You're right, ABB has become a significant player in the electrical equipment market, and it's understandable to be unfamiliar with them if you've been out of the loop for a couple of years. Let's break down who they are and their relationship to breakers

Who is ABB?
Multinational Corporation

ABB is a massive, multinational corporation headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.

Diverse Operations

While they are well-known for electrical equipment, they operate in a very broad range of sectors, including: Electrification (including the electrical panels, breakers, and related equipment we're discussing) Automation (robotics, industrial automation systems) Motion (motors, drives) Robotics & Discrete Automation

Acquisition History

A key point to understand ABB's presence in the North American electrical market is their acquisition history. They significantly expanded their footprint by acquiring GE Industrial Solutions (GEIS) in 2018.

GEIS included the GE line of electrical panels and breakers.
Global Reach

They are a major global player, with operations and sales worldwide.

Are Their Breakers Also ABB?
Yes, with a History

The breakers you see associated with ABB today are often the same designs that used to be branded as GE. After the acquisition, ABB has been gradually transitioning the branding on these products. So, you might see some older panels with GE breakers, and newer ones with ABB breakers, but often the underlying technology is the same.

Product Lines

ABB now offers a comprehensive line of circuit breakers under the ABB brand, including: Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs) AFCI/GFCI Breakers and more...

Compatibility

The breakers are generally designed to be compatible with their panels (and, in many cases, panels that used to be GE-branded). Always check the specific panel and breaker specifications to ensure compatibility.

Key Takeaways and What This Means For You

ABB is a Reputable Brand

ABB is a well-established and reputable company in the electrical industry. Their equipment is generally considered to be of good quality.

Familiar Technology

If you've used GE electrical panels and breakers in the past, you'll likely find ABB's equivalent offerings familiar.

Check Specifications

As always, carefully check the specifications and ratings of any electrical equipment you're considering to ensure it meets your needs and complies with local codes.

Consult with an Electrician:
When working with electrical panels and breakers, it is always best to consult with a qualified and licensed electrician to ensure proper installation and safety. In summary, seeing ABB equipment now is normal. They are a significant player, largely due to their acquisition of GE Industrial Solutions. Their breakers are now branded as ABB, but often share the same designs and technology as the former GE breakers. Flag for review
