Question: 5 Legrand gfci bad out of box-Cadet two pole thermostats only lasting 1.5 years.WAC downlight bad out of box-6Quad br breaker bad after a year. This is all in one month of service. Is it just me or is everything just *6*5# garageSupply house tells me I am only one calling about problems.I tell him I am the only one stingy enough to return crap, others probably just toss and call it a day.I hate products today just garbage

You're not alone in feeling that way. It sounds incredibly frustrating to have so many failures of electrical components in such a short time. While your supply house might not be hearing complaints, it doesn't mean the problems aren't happening. Here's a breakdown of what could be going on and what you can do

Possible Explanations:
Defective Batch

It's possible you received a bad batch of components, especially if they are the same model from the same manufacturer. Sometimes production flaws can lead to widespread failures.

Power Quality Issues

Problems with your electrical system can cause premature failure of components. Issues like voltage fluctuations, surges, or harmonics can stress the components beyond their rated capacity.

Installation Issues

While you sound experienced, it's worth considering if any installation practices are contributing to the failures. Are you using the correct wire gauge, tightening connections to the proper torque, or ensuring adequate ventilation? Incorrect wiring or loose connections can generate heat, which can shorten the life of components.

Supplier's Source

Sometimes, suppliers might be sourcing products from less reputable manufacturers to save money.

Increased Manufacturing Pressure

In recent years, there has been increased pressure on manufacturers to cut costs, potentially leading to lower quality materials or less stringent quality control.

The "Throw-Away" Culture

As you mentioned, some people simply replace defective items without complaining, so the supply house might not be fully aware of the extent of the problem.

Legrand GFCI Issues

Some electricians have reported higher failure rates with certain Legrand GFCI models. It might be worth researching if the specific model you're using has a history of problems.

What You Can Do

Document Everything

Keep detailed records of each failure, including the date of purchase, installation date, failure date, model number, and any observed symptoms. Take pictures or videos of the failures if possible.

Contact the Manufacturers Directly

Report the issues directly to the manufacturers of the defective products. They may be more responsive than the supply house, especially if there's a known problem with a particular product line.

Consider a Different Supplier

If possible, try sourcing your components from a different supply house to see if you experience similar issues.

Monitor Your Power Quality

Have a qualified electrician check your electrical system for any power quality issues that could be contributing to the failures.

Review Your Installation Practices

Double-check your installation practices against the manufacturer's instructions and relevant electrical codes.

Be Specific With the Supply House

When you report the failures, be very specific about the model numbers and the symptoms you're observing. Ask them to investigate the issue further and to consider switching to a different brand.

Consider Higher-End Components

While it might be more expensive upfront, investing in higher-quality components from reputable manufacturers could save you money in the long run by reducing the frequency of failures.

Share Your Experiences Online

Post reviews and comments about the defective products on online forums and review sites. This can help other electricians and consumers avoid similar problems.

Regarding Specific Products

Legrand GFCIs

Consider trying a different brand of GFCI, such as Leviton or Eaton, to see if the problem persists.

Cadet Two-Pole Thermostats

Look for thermostats with a better warranty or consider a different brand known for reliability.

WAC Downlights

Review the installation instructions to ensure proper heat dissipation. If the problem persists, switch to a different brand or consider LED downlights with longer lifespans.*

Quad BR Breaker:
Ensure the breaker is properly sized for the circuit and that there are no overloads or short circuits causing it to fail. If the problem persists, try a different brand or a higher-quality breaker. You're not being stingy by returning defective products; you're holding manufacturers and suppliers accountable for their quality. Keep doing what you're doing, and hopefully, you'll start seeing fewer failures. Flag for review
