Question: I am in a new to me home. There is a floor electrical box with an outlet inside I have never encountered . Pictures attached. Anyone recognize and explain its use? thanks
Okay, I've looked at the pictures. This is definitely a floor outlet, and it's a type I've seen but isn't super common anymore. Here's what I can tell you and what you should know
What it is:
Pop-Up or Retractable Floor Outlet
This is designed to sit flush with the floor when not in use and then "pop up" or extend when you need to plug something in. The idea is to be less obtrusive and prevent tripping hazards.
Likely a Single Outlet
It looks like it only provides a single electrical outlet.
Flush Mounting Plate
The outer ring is a flush mounting plate, designed to fit tightly to the floor.
How it Likely Works
Press and Release (Most Likely)
Typically, you press down on the top of the cylindrical part of the outlet. This releases a locking mechanism, and the outlet should pop up.
Push Back Down to Retract
Once you're done using it, you push it back down, and it locks back into the flush position.
Common Uses
Living Rooms
For lamps or occasional use with electronics without running cords across the room.
Offices/Studies
For desk lamps, laptops, or other equipment where a wall outlet isn't conveniently located.
Dining Rooms
For buffet warmers, chafing dishes, etc., during special occasions.
Important Considerations & Things to Check
Safety
Grounding
Make absolutely certain the outlet is properly grounded. An ungrounded floor outlet is a serious electrical hazard. If you are not comfortable checking this yourself, hire a qualified electrician.
Moisture
Floor outlets are more susceptible to moisture damage than wall outlets. Check for any signs of corrosion or water entry. Again, if there's any doubt, have an electrician inspect it.
Functionality
Test the Pop-Up Mechanism
Make sure it pops up and retracts smoothly. If it's sticky or doesn't lock properly, it may need cleaning or repair.
Test the Outlet
Use a receptacle tester (available at any hardware store) to make sure the outlet is wired correctly and is functioning properly.
Cleanliness
Clean around the rim of the outlet. Dirt and debris can prevent the mechanism from working smoothly.
Cover
I would recommend you purchase and install a cover. This will protect the outlet from dust and dirt, prevent someone from tripping on it and improve the overall safety of the install.
Troubleshooting
Stuck
If it's stuck, try gently prying around the edges with a small, flat screwdriver or putty knife to break any seal. Don't force it.
Doesn't Work
If the outlet doesn't work, check the circuit breaker. If the breaker is fine, there could be a wiring issue. Do not attempt to repair electrical wiring yourself unless you are qualified to do so.
Loose
If the entire outlet is loose in the floor, it needs to be properly secured. This often involves shimming and re-tightening the mounting screws.
