Topic: Does anyone know which dimmable led lights that will fit 4” hole? I tried a few, but the specs for the back diameter don’t match up to the product.

Question: Does anyone know of a recessed led that will fit in our 4” ceiling holes, for a canless install? I’ve tried 3 already, but the backs are 5-6 inches and I don’t want to cut my ceiling. I just painted it. Feit made one that said 5/6 and it fit in my hole. Unfortunately it was the wrong style. Retrofit won’t work. So, how do I find one that will fit? Any help is greatly appreciated! I prefer the light to be flush to the ceiling, or at least not protrude outwards like the builder grade ones that came with the house. I have a Lutron Maestro Pro Dimmer and need to make sure it’s compatible.

You're in a tricky spot! It sounds like you have shallow ceiling cavities. Let's break down how to find the right canless recessed LED that fits your 4" hole, works with your Lutron dimmer, and is flush-ish.

Understanding the Problem and Your Needs Shallow Ceiling Cavity

This is the core issue. Standard canless fixtures assume a certain depth.

4" Hole Size

You're locked into this.

Flush or Semi-Flush Look

You want a modern, integrated appearance.

Lutron Maestro Pro Dimmer Compatibility

Crucial for proper dimming and avoiding flickering/buzzing.

Finding the Right Light - Strategy & Tactics
1. Focus on "Ultra-Thin" or "Pancake" Designs

These are specifically designed for shallow ceiling applications. They have a minimal driver box.2.

Hyper-Specific Product Descriptions

Look beyond just "canless" or "recessed." The magic words are "ultra-thin," "shallow," or "pancake." Also look for terms like "IC-Rated" (Insulation Contact Rated) to ensure they're safe to be near insulation.3.

Carefully Check Product Dimensions (The Most Important Step!)

Back Diameter

This is often the same as the hole size, but double-check.

Back Height/Depth

This is the critical measurement. You need to find lights where the driver box and any other components behind the light are LESS than the depth of your ceiling cavity.

Bezel Diameter

The outer ring should be wider than 4" to cover the hole.4.

Filter Online Searches

Use filters to narrow down your search. On Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon, or other retailers, filter by:

Size

Specify "4 inch" or similar.

Type

Choose "LED Recessed Lighting" or "Canless Recessed Lighting".

Special Features

Look for filters like "Ultra-Thin" or sometimes you can specify "Shallow Ceiling".5.

Check Spec Sheets

Once you find a potential candidate, always download or view the product's specification sheet (often a PDF on the product page). This gives you the exact dimensions and technical details.6.

Dimmer Compatibility Lists

Many lighting manufacturers publish compatibility lists for their lights with various dimmers (Lutron, Leviton, etc.). Always consult the manufacturer's list for your chosen light and your Lutron Maestro Pro dimmer. This is the best way to guarantee smooth, flicker-free dimming. Lutron also has a tool to check their dimmers.7.

Read Reviews

Search for reviews that mention shallow ceiling installations. People often share their experiences and mention if the light fit or not.8.

Buy ONE to Test

Never buy a whole batch until you've tested one light thoroughly. Install it, dim it, and make sure it meets your expectations.

Specific Product Recommendations (Starting Points, Check Dimensions Carefully!)
Halo HLB4

Halo is a reputable brand. The HLB series is generally ultra-thin.
However, you must check the specific model's depth. Some are deeper than others. Check the spec sheet. Halo often has dimmer compatibility information.

Commercial Electric Ultra-Slim

Commercial Electric is a Home Depot brand. They often have competitively priced ultra-thin options. Again, carefully verify dimensions.

Sunco Lighting

Sunco is a popular brand on Amazon. They have many ultra-thin options. Check for dimmer compatibility information.

Lithonia Lighting Wafer

Another reputable brand, Lithonia has "wafer" lights that are designed to be very thin.

Alternative Strategies (If You're Still Struggling)
Carefully Measure Your Ceiling Cavity

Use a small mirror and a ruler or tape measure to accurately determine the depth available. This will give you a concrete number to work with.

Consult an Electrician

A qualified electrician can assess your specific situation and recommend suitable lighting solutions.

Consider a Different Style

If flush isn't achievable, look for something with a very minimal profile that sits close to the ceiling.

Important Considerations

Light Output (Lumens)

Make sure the light provides enough brightness for the space.

Color Temperature (Kelvin)

Choose a color temperature (e.g., 2700K for warm white, 3000K for soft white, 4000K for bright white) that you find pleasing.

Wet Rating

If the lights are going in a bathroom or other damp location, make sure they're wet-rated or damp-rated.

Good luck!
Finding the perfect lighting can be frustrating, but with careful research and attention to detail, you can find canless recessed LEDs that fit your needs. Be patient, and measure twice before you buy! Flag for review
