Question: I have a couple of coils of 14-2 UF cable that have been sitting on my shelf for while that have never been used. I was looking at them earlier today, and they have a 2019 date on them. Would you still use them? They look new.
Yes, you can almost certainly still use that 14-2 UF cable, even with a 2019 date code. Here's why: UF Cable is Durable
UF (Underground Feeder) cable is designed to withstand harsh conditions. It's made with a very durable outer jacket to protect the conductors from moisture, sunlight, and physical damage.
Storage Conditions
If the cable has been stored indoors, on a shelf, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, it's very likely to be in excellent condition.
No Expiration Date
Electrical cable doesn't have a hard expiration date like food. As long as the insulation isn't cracked, brittle, or otherwise damaged, it should be safe to use.
Visual Inspection
Since you say it looks new, that's a good sign.
Before Using, Do This
Careful Visual Inspection
Look closely at the entire length of the cable, paying particular attention to: Cracks, cuts, or abrasions in the outer jacket. Any signs of discoloration, brittleness, or melting.* If the cable has been exposed to solvents or chemicals.2.
Flexibility
Gently bend and flex the cable in several places. It should be pliable, not stiff or brittle.3.
Conductor Inspection (If Possible)
If you can see the exposed conductors at the ends of the cable (without cutting into it), check for corrosion or damage.
If you find any damage or are unsure about the condition of the cable, it's best to err on the side of caution and not use it.In Summary: Given that it's been stored indoors and appears to be in good condition, that 2019 14-2 UF cable is highly likely to be perfectly usable. Just perform a thorough visual inspection before you install it. Flag for review
