Question: I was fishing wire and a ground hit the bus. It arced pretty bad! I feel like for safety reasons I need to replace this bus now. It’s a 40/80 indoor panel main breaker square D home line. I want to replace just the main bus and breaker (obviously torque to spec) but have never done just bus replacement. Is it possible or do I need to just swap the entire panel. I know Siemens it’s possible
Okay, let's break down your situation and how to approach it safely and correctly. Arcing events like the one you described can cause damage that's not always immediately visible, and your concern about the bus bar is valid.
The Core Question: Bus Bar Replacement Feasibility Square D Homeline Bus Bar Availability
While some manufacturers offer replacement bus bars for certain panel models,
Square D generally does not sell individual bus bars for Homeline panels. Their philosophy is typically to replace the entire panel. Why the Whole Panel Recommendation? Safety
The intense heat and energy of an arc can weaken the bus bar material itself and the surrounding insulation. This weakening can lead to future failures, even if the damage isn't obvious.
Liability
Replacing the bus bar yourself introduces a lot of potential liability. If something goes wrong down the line, and there's a fire or other electrical issue, insurance companies or investigators might question the integrity of the repair.
Warranty
Replacing individual components yourself will void any remaining warranty on the panel.
Integrity of connections
Bus bars are often formed or shaped as part of the enclosure. When there is an arcing event there can be unseen damage to the bus bar assembly at other connection points within the panel. Replacing the assembly as a whole helps ensure proper and safe connections.
Recommended Action: Panel Replacement
Given the arcing event and the difficulty (and potential risks) of just replacing the bus bar in a Square D Homeline panel, replacing the entire panel is the strongly recommended course of action. Here's why:1. Safety
It eliminates the risk of hidden damage to the bus bar or other components that could lead to future failures.2.
Peace of Mind
You'll have a brand-new, fully warrantied panel with a known safety record.3.
Code Compliance
Ensures you're meeting all current electrical code requirements.4.
Long-Term Reliability
A new panel should provide decades of reliable service.
Steps for Panel Replacement (Important: Hire a Qualified Electrician) Call a Licensed Electrician
This is not a DIY project for someone without extensive electrical experience. Electrical work is dangerous and can be deadly if not done correctly. Also, electrical work usually requires permits and inspections, which a qualified electrician can handle. Describe the Situation
Explain to the electrician exactly what happened (the arcing event, the wire involved, etc.). This will help them assess the situation and choose the right replacement panel.
Panel Selection
Your electrician will help you choose a new panel. You'll likely want to replace it with a similar 40/80 Square D Homeline panel unless there's a good reason to upgrade. The new panel will have the correct main breaker size (matching your service) and enough spaces for all your existing circuits, plus some spares for future expansion.
Disconnect Power
The electrician will coordinate with the utility company to disconnect power to your home during the panel replacement.
Never attempt this yourself. Remove Old Panel
The electrician will carefully remove the old panel, labeling all the wires as they disconnect them.
Install New Panel
The new panel will be mounted, and all the wires will be reconnected according to the labels and electrical code.
Torque to Spec
The electrician will use a torque screwdriver to ensure that all connections are tightened to the manufacturer's specifications. This is crucial for safe and reliable connections.
Inspection
The electrician will test the panel and all the circuits to ensure everything is working correctly. They will also arrange for an electrical inspection (if required by your local code).
Reconnect Power
The utility company will reconnect power to your home.
Important Considerations
Permits
Most jurisdictions require electrical permits for panel replacements. Your electrician will handle this.
Inspection
After the replacement, a local electrical inspector will likely need to inspect the work to ensure it meets code.
Cost
Panel replacement costs vary depending on the size of the panel, the complexity of the wiring, and local labor rates. Get a quote from several qualified electricians before making a decision.
In Summary:
While it might seem appealing to try and save money by just replacing the bus bar, the risks and potential long-term problems associated with that approach outweigh the cost savings. A full panel replacement by a qualified electrician is the safest and most reliable solution. Flag for review
