Question: Need some help understanding this . I have a 3.5 inch conduit from the roof going to the basement combiner panel. There are 30#6 thhn conductrs installed on a 30 amp breaker. The conduit is mounted on kindorf roof curbs about 5-6inches from surface.Am I code compliant. Can someone help me with the formula.I've attached the chart for my local ambient tmeps
Okay, let's break down the code compliance of your conduit installation. This requires considering several factors
1. Ampacity of #6 THHN:
Standard THHN in a wet location is typically rated for 55 amps at 90°C (194°F). However, if you have a dry location THHN, its normally rated for 75 amps. However, we must consider the temperature ratings on all the equipment2. Ampacity Adjustment for the number of conductors
Derating for Number of Conductors
30 current-carrying conductors in a conduit requires ampacity derating. According to NEC Table 310.15(C)(1), we will derate to 50%. Ampacity adjustment is (55 amps)(.50)= 27.5 amps. We will round down to 25 amps
3. Termination Temperature
According to NEC article 110.14(C), you must consider the termination temperature of all the equipment. In this case, the weakest link is the 60-degree terminal rating.
4. Ambient Temperature Correction
Ambient Temperature Adjustment
You've provided local ambient temperatures. NEC Table 310.15(B)(1) provides temperature correction factors. To use this, you need to know the temperature rating of your conductor (THHN is often rated for 90°C). You'll find a correction factor based on your highest expected ambient temperature.Let's assume, for example, your highest ambient temperature is 41-45°C (106-113°F). If the wire is rated for 90-degree C (194 F) then there will be no adjustment
Summary and Code Compliance
Conductor Ampacity
The 6 AWG THHN would normally be rated for 55amps.2.
Derating for number of Conductors
30 current-carrying conductors required a 50% derating factor. This lowers the ampacity to 27.5amps.
3.
Termination temperature. Since the termination temperature is rated for 60-degree C, the 6 AWG conductor is rated for 25amps.
Based on the above information, the installation is not compliant with codeImportant Considerations and Recommendations
Consult a Licensed Electrician
This analysis is for informational purposes only and should not be considered a substitute for professional advice. A licensed electrician can accurately assess your specific situation, perform the necessary calculations, and ensure full code compliance.
Overcurrent Protection
The 30-amp breaker is oversized for the adjusted ampacity of the conductors. You will need to reduce the breaker size to 25 amps.
