Question: I want to try out helical light pole bases for a project instead of concrete bases.Trying to find an on line place to order some, anyone have a source?I can Google several vendors, but they are all the 1900s style "Sit down, give us a call, and waste an hour BSing with our sales people" type of places. Hate that crap. Just give me specs, a price, and a place to enter my CC number and I'm GTG.

You're right, finding a truly streamlined online ordering experience for helical light pole bases can be frustrating. Most vendors in this industry still rely on traditional sales processes. However, there are a few avenues you can explore to potentially get closer to your desired "specs, price, and CC number" experience

1. Look for Manufacturers Targeting Smaller Projects/DIYers:
While the big players focus on large commercial projects, some smaller manufacturers or distributors cater to individuals, contractors, or smaller-scale projects. These might be more likely to have online ordering or at least offer more transparent pricing and specs upfront. Search for things like "helical pier light pole base DIY" or "small helical pier supplier". Consider checking sites like eBay and similar online marketplaces. Private or small businesses might post deals there.2. Search for Related Products with Online Ordering

Helical Piers for Sheds/Decks/Fences

These are often similar in design and load capacity to light pole bases. You might find vendors offering these with online ordering and then adapt them to your light pole project. Check the load ratings and specifications carefully to ensure they meet your needs.

Ground Screws

These are also helical and used for various applications, including signs and small structures. Again, check load ratings, but you might find a suitable option with online ordering.

3. Contact Distributors with Online Catalogs (and be assertive)

Many distributors have extensive online catalogs with product specs and technical data. While they might not have a direct "add to cart" button, use the catalog to identify the exact product you need, including part numbers and dimensions. When you contact them, be very clear and direct: "I need to order [specific part number] helical light pole bases. Can you provide a price and ordering instructions? I prefer to pay by credit card and avoid a lengthy sales call." Be firm but polite.

4. Consider Working with a Local Contractor (if possible)

Even if you want to handle the installation yourself, a local contractor who specializes in helical piers or foundations might be able to source the materials for you at a better price and with less hassle. They likely have established relationships with suppliers.

5. Specific Vendor Suggestions (with caveats - do your own verification!)

I still can't endorse any of these vendors and you'll need to research if they suit your needs.

Important Considerations BEFORE Ordering

Soil Conditions

Helical pier performance is heavily dependent on soil conditions. You absolutely must have a geotechnical report or at least a thorough understanding of your soil to select the right helical pier. Consider a soil test if you are unsure.

Load Calculations

Calculate the wind load and dead load on your light poles to determine the required load capacity of the helical piers. Err on the side of caution.*

Installation:
Helical piers need to be installed correctly to achieve their rated capacity. Consider renting the proper equipment (torque motor) or hiring a professional installer.Good luck with your project! The "easy button" for this kind of product is still rare, but hopefully, these strategies will help you find a solution without the dreaded sales calls. Flag for review
