Question: Does anyone know the name or cable type for the 6C cable for generator communications?(This is for an 18 kw Generac)Side note. I am NOT looking for the all in one cable that has line and low voltage in the same assembly.

You're likely referring to a cable used for serial communication between the generator and potentially a monitoring system or an automatic transfer switch (ATS). Since you're specifically excluding the bundled control cable, here's what I think it is and why

Likely Cable Type: Stranded CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet Cable

Why

Serial Communication

Many Generac generators use serial communication (like RS-485 or something similar) for data transfer. Ethernet cable, especially CAT5e or CAT6, is well-suited for this.

6 Conductors

While CAT5e/6 has 8 conductors, it's common practice to only use 6 of those conductors for serial communication signals to reduce interference.

Availability & Cost

Ethernet cable is widely available, relatively inexpensive, and easy to work with (crimping, terminating).

How to Confirm (If Possible)

Check the Generator's Manual

The most definitive answer will be in the generator's installation or service manual. Look for a wiring diagram or a section detailing the communication cable connections. It might specify the cable type.2.

Examine the Connector

Carefully look at the connector that plugs into the generator. Is it an RJ45 (like an Ethernet connector)? Is it a smaller connector, such as a DB9. If so, this is a serial connector.

Look at the Wiring

If you can access the wiring where the cable connects, see how many wires are actually being used. If it's 6, that further supports the CAT5e/6 theory.

Important Considerations

Shielded vs. Unshielded

Depending on the environment and the distance of the cable run, you might want to consider a shielded CAT5e or CAT6 cable (STP - Shielded Twisted Pair). Shielding helps protect the signal from electromagnetic interference (EMI). If the generator is in a noisy electrical environment, shielding is recommended.

Cable Length

Adhere to the maximum recommended length for CAT5e/6 cables to maintain signal integrity.

Termination

Ensure proper termination of the cable ends using the correct RJ45 connectors and crimping tools.*

Wire gauge
- I would assume that 24 AWG would be sufficient, but check the manual to ensure proper wire gauge.
