Question: Is a wall mounted light fixture mounted above a panelboard allowed in the dedicated equipment space? Or would it be considered foreign to the electrical installation? Thanks,

Allowed

A wall-mounted light fixture mounted above a panelboard is allowed in the dedicated equipment space, provided it is not considered foreign to the electrical installation.

NEC Considerations Article 110.11(B) allows equipment to be installed in the dedicated equipment space, provided it is necessary for the proper functioning of the electrical installation. Article 404.2 requires panelboards to be located in accessible and relatively dry locations. Lighting can be considered essential for access and maintenance.

Code Interpretation

Since a light fixture is necessary for proper maintenance and access to the panelboard, it is considered part of the electrical installation and not foreign to it. As such, it is allowed to be mounted above the panelboard in the dedicated equipment space.

Additional Considerations The light fixture should be securely mounted and not interfere with the operation of the panelboard. The fixture should be located in a way that minimizes any potential impact on the panelboard's functionality or access.* The fixture should meet all applicable electrical code requirements, including those related to illumination levels and fixture protection.
