Question: Was working at a local hospital the other day when another electrical outfit went into one of the panels we installed. The guy told my foreman that there needed to be a bonding jumper between the two ground bars to meet code. I didnt think that was the case, has anyone ever heard of this??
Yes, it is a requirement of the National Electrical Code (NEC) to bond the two ground bars in an electrical panel together.
Article 300.3(B) of the NEC states:> "Where an equipment grounding conductor is installed, it shall be connected to the equipment grounding terminal of the system feeder disconnecting means. Where more than one equipment grounding conductor is used, they shall be connected together at one location only. This location shall be as close as practicable to the service entrance where accessible for inspection."By bonding the two ground bars together, it ensures that there is a continuous path for fault current to flow back to the source. This helps to protect people from electrical shocks and prevents damage to equipment. It is important to follow all applicable electrical codes and standards to ensure the safety and reliability of electrical installations.
