Question: If i am doing a bathroom that only has a bath Tub or a stand up shower and toilet No sink. Do i need a GFI in the bathroom. this is something we are talking about in the office. Thanks
Yes, you need a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) in a bathroom, even if it only has a bathtub or stand-up shower and a toilet, with no sink.According to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and most local building codes: GFCIs are required in all bathrooms (Article 210.8(A)(1)) regardless of the presence or absence of a sink. GFCIs are required to protect all outlets within 6 feet of a bathtub, shower, or sink (Article 210.8(A)(1)).The NEC defines a bathroom as "a room containing a bathtub or shower and shall include sink(s), if provided." Therefore, even if your bathroom does not have a sink, it is still considered a bathroom and requires a GFCI for the electrical outlets.GFCIs work by detecting small imbalances in the electrical current between the hot and neutral wires. If they detect an imbalance, which can occur if electricity is escaping through water or a wet surface, they quickly shut off the power to prevent electrical shock. This is especially important in bathrooms, where water is often present and can create a hazardous environment for electrical currents. Flag for review
