Question: I've been wondering for a couple years now but just haven't had much sidework. When doing a panel upgrade do you have to use AFCI breakers in bedrooms. Also if your upgrading a 200 amp panel to a different manufacturer do you have to upgrade the meter base also even though there is not a need to, but there might be that's why I'm asking.I am no longer an apprentice this username was made a few years back.

AFCI Breakers in Bedrooms

Yes, according to the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC), all bedrooms must have AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breakers. AFCIs help protect against electrical fires caused by arcing faults, which are common in bedrooms due to the presence of electronics and other potential sources of arcing.

Meter Base Upgrade with Panel Upgrade

Whether or not you need to upgrade the meter base when upgrading a 200 amp panel to a different manufacturer depends on several factors:

Meter Base Rating

The existing meter base must be rated for at least 200 amps. If it is not, it will need to be upgraded.

Meter Wattage

The meter must be capable of handling the increased wattage of the new panel.

Compatibility

The new panel must be compatible with the existing meter and meter base.

Local Codes:
Some local building codes may require a meter base upgrade when a panel is upgraded to a higher amperage.Generally, if the existing meter base is rated for 200 amps or more, compatible with the new panel, and can handle the increased wattage, you may not need to upgrade it. However, it's always best to consult with a licensed electrician to determine the specific requirements in your area. Flag for review
