Question: Hello,I would very much appreciate some help and some guidabce. I am aware that a cable used in a class 1 zone 1 area needs to be armoured, however, what about a ground cable? Thanks,Rich.
Ground Cable Requirements in Class 1 Zone 1 Areas
In hazardous areas classified as Class 1 Zone 1, the requirements for ground cables differ from those for power cables.According to IEC 60079-14 (Electrical Installations in Hazardous Areas - Part 14: Electrical Installations Design, Selection and Erection), the following requirements apply to ground cables in Class 1 Zone 1 areas: Armoring
Ground cables are not explicitly required to be armored. However, if the ground cable is expected to serve multiple purposes (e.g., also as a surge protection cable), it should be armored to provide mechanical protection.
Material
Ground cables should be made of copper or galvanized steel.
Cross-sectional area
The cross-sectional area of the ground cable should be at least 6 mm² (10 AWG) for copper and 25 mm² (4 AWG) for galvanized steel.
Earthing
Ground cables should be properly earthed to a suitable earthing system.
Routing
Ground cables should be installed in a way that provides adequate protection from physical damage and prevents the accumulation of static charges.
Additional Considerations
In some cases, local codes or regulations may impose additional requirements for ground cables in Class 1 Zone 1 areas.* It is always recommended to consult with a qualified electrician or a certified hazardous area specialist for specific guidance on the electrical installation in hazardous areas.
Summary:
Ground cables in Class 1 Zone 1 areas do not have to be armored by default, but they should be made of conductive material, have an adequate cross-sectional area, be properly earthed, and be installed in a safe manner. Flag for review
