Question: Hi Mike:I've been trying to find a place to ask this ? for many years. The NEC was originally designed to protect persons from electrical shock or electrocution and equipment and buildings from fire and damage. What happened to that.Today's code can be understood by almost no one and what we did used to understand is constantly moved around to where you can't find it. The first page now has a disclaimer which says if you use this code and something bad happens don't blame us cause we apparently don't believe it either. It now basically says YOU MUstt Do It This Way Unless You Do It Another Way ?Plus the whole book is crossed referenced to the whole book. The code panels are a bunch of politically motivated people Mfg,Unions.ContrAssoc. etc very few Elec Engr and maybe NO practising electricians. The Matter of product quality which is currently our biggest problem is completely Ignored. Why can't we have some people with common sense on these panels. Speak up Mike

Concerns about the Current NEC

The concerns you raise about the National Electrical Code (NEC) are valid and shared by many in the electrical industry. Here are some key points: Complexity and Accessibility

The NEC has become increasingly complex over the years, making it difficult for even experienced electricians to understand and apply. The constant reorganization and cross-referencing further compounds this issue.

Disclaimer and Liability

The disclaimer on the first page of the NEC effectively absolves the code-making panels from liability in the event of an accident. This raises questions about the enforceability and accountability of the code.

Lack of Clarity

The "you must do it this way unless you do it another way" approach creates ambiguity and leaves room for interpretation, which can lead to confusion and inconsistent application.

Political Influence

The code-making panels are composed of representatives from various industry groups, including manufacturers, unions, and contractors. As a result, the NEC can be influenced by political motivations and vested interests rather than technical expertise.*

Neglect of Product Quality

You rightly point out that the issue of product quality, which has become a major concern in the electrical industry, is largely ignored by the NEC.

Need for Common Sense and Practicality

The NEC is a vital safety document, but it is essential that it be based on sound technical principles and practical application. To improve the code, it is imperative to include more qualified electrical engineers and practicing electricians on the code-making panels.Additionally, the code should provide clear and concise guidance, with minimal cross-referencing and ambiguity. It should also address emerging issues such as product quality and new technologies.By making these changes, the NEC can regain its status as a respected and reliable resource for the electrical industry. It is time for the code to be revised by those who are directly involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems. Flag for review
