Question: Hi my question is it OK to use just a Weather Tight EMT connecter to enter the top of an outdoor trauf or should i use a meyers hub also? Sometimes i over think things. just wanted to make sure. Thanks,Feel The Power Electric LLC
It is generally not advisable to use just a weather-tight EMT connector to enter the top of an outdoor trough. While the connector may provide some protection against moisture, it is not as effective as a Myers hub.
Reasons to Use a Myers Hub
Watertight Seal
Myers hubs have a threaded entry and a gasket that forms a watertight seal around the EMT conduit. This prevents water from entering the trough and damaging the electrical components.
Strain Relief
Myers hubs provide strain relief for the EMT conduit, preventing it from being pulled out of the trough. This ensures a secure connection and prevents potential hazards.
Corrosion Resistance
Myers hubs are typically made of corrosion-resistant materials, such as zinc or aluminum, which can withstand outdoor conditions and prevent rust.
When to Use a Weather-Tight EMT Connector
Weather-tight EMT connectors may be used in certain limited situations, such as:
Indoor Locations
When the trough is located indoors and protected from moisture.*
Short Runs
If the EMT run to the trough is very short (e.g., a few inches) and the connector is properly installed and sealed.
Best Practice
The best practice is to always use a Myers hub when entering the top of an outdoor trough. This provides the best protection against water ingress, strain relief, and corrosion resistance.
Conclusion:
While it may seem like overthinking, using a Myers hub is crucial for ensuring the safety and integrity of the electrical system in an outdoor trough. It is a small investment that can prevent significant damage and hazards in the long run. Flag for review
