Question: How is the best way to ground these 6' fences that has a electric gate attached ? The only thing grounded is the electric motor with a #12 feed to sub panel through pvc conduit . Grounding grid appears to far from fence to attach to fence.
Grounding a 6' Fence with Electric Gate and Isolated Grounding Grid
Step 1: Install Ground Rods Drive two 8-foot ground rods at least 6 feet apart, 12-18 inches away from the fence line. Use a ground rod driver or pound the rods into the ground using a sledgehammer.
Step 2: Connect Ground Rods Cut a 1/2-inch copper grounding wire to a length of 12 feet. Using a ground rod clamp, connect one end of the wire to each ground rod. Wrap the wire around the clamps tightly and secure with bolts.
Step 3: Ground the Fence Cut several 1/2-inch copper bonding straps to a length of 6 feet. Attach one end of each bonding strap to a vertical fence post using a bolt or screw. Wrap the other end of the strap around the ground rod connection wire and secure with a bolt or screw. Space the bonding straps evenly along the fence at intervals not exceeding 10 feet.
Step 4: Ground the Electric Gate Cut a 6-foot length of 1/2-inch copper wire. Connect one end of the wire to the grounding terminal of the electric gate motor. Connect the other end of the wire to the ground rod connection wire using a ground rod clamp.
Step 5: Test Grounding Use a multimeter set to the resistance scale. Measure the resistance between the ground rod connection wire and a known good ground, such as a cold water pipe or the grounding block in the subpanel. The resistance should be less than 5 ohms.
Additional Tips: The ground rod connection wire should be routed underground, parallel to the fence line, at a depth of at least 12 inches. Use a non-metallic conduit to protect the ground rod connection wire where it crosses driveways or other areas subject to heavy traffic. If the grounding grid is too far from the fence, consider installing a dedicated ground ring for the fence and gate. Flag for review
