Question: was doing a mall store recently and noticed the 480 was around 510. I was just there helping finish up, so I didn't mess with any of the trannies (the 208 was a little high). At what point do you feel responsible to start fiddling with the taps ? 10% ?
The decision of when to adjust transformer taps depends on several factors, including: Voltage Regulation Requirements
Each utility has specific voltage regulation standards that must be met. Exceeding the acceptable voltage variation range can affect equipment performance and safety.
Equipment Sensitivity
Some equipment is more sensitive to voltage variations than others. Critical loads, such as computer systems or medical devices, may require tighter voltage regulation.*
System Load Conditions
The load on the transformer can affect the voltage drop and the need for tap adjustments. When the load is high, the voltage drop may increase, necessitating tap adjustment.Generally, it is considered best practice to adjust transformer taps when the voltage deviates from the desired range by more than
5%. This threshold is based on the typical accuracy of voltage meters and the ability to adjust taps without affecting system stability. In your case, with the 480V transformer measuring 510V, the deviation is approximately 6.25%, which exceeds the 5% threshold. Therefore, it would be prudent to consider adjusting the taps to bring the voltage closer to the desired level.
Note: It is important to follow proper safety protocols and have qualified personnel perform any transformer tap adjustments. Flag for review
