Question: Had a guy tell me that in a neighboring State, in particular the big box stores, that they weren't allowed to sell water heaters to anyone who wasn't a licensed or permitted electrician. I have seen a lot of HO or handyman installations that might make this a good idea but I have not heard of that. The box stores sell a lot of items that a HO shouldn't install unless qualified, I just wondered why just water heaters if this is true. Has anyone here heard of such a rule in any State?
It is generally not true that big box stores are prohibited from selling water heaters to non-licensed electricians in neighboring states, but it can depend on specific local regulations and codes. However, in many areas, it is required that the installation of water heaters be performed by licensed electricians, and some states may have additional restrictions on who can purchase electrical components such as water heaters. Here's some more information on this topic
Licensing Requirements for Water Heater Installation:
In most states and municipalities, it is required that the installation of water heaters be performed by licensed electricians. This is because water heaters are electrical appliances that can be dangerous if installed incorrectly, and improper installation can pose a fire hazard or other risks.
Restrictions on Purchasing Electrical Components
Some states and municipalities may have restrictions on who can purchase electrical components such as water heaters. For example, in some areas, homeowners may be prohibited from purchasing certain types of electrical equipment without a permit or license. These restrictions are typically in place to ensure that electrical work is performed safely and in accordance with applicable codes.
Big Box Stores and Water Heater Sales
Big box stores typically sell water heaters to the general public, but they may have policies or procedures in place to comply with local regulations and codes. For example, they may require customers to provide proof of licensing or a permit before purchasing a water heater in areas where such requirements exist.
Exceptions and Waivers:
In some cases, homeowners may be allowed to install water heaters themselves if they meet certain qualifications or obtain a permit. For example, some states may allow homeowners to install water heaters in their own homes if they have received proper training or have experience in electrical work. However, it is essential to check with local authorities to determine the specific requirements and regulations in your area.Overall, while it is generally not true that big box stores are prohibited from selling water heaters to non-licensed electricians, it is important to be aware of any specific regulations or codes that may apply in your state or municipality. It is always advisable to consult with local authorities and licensed professionals to ensure compliance with all applicable requirements. Flag for review
