Question: We are replacing appx. 50 worn out 120V receptacles and leaking w.p. flip covers indoors in a wet location and we'd like to use aluminum in-use style covers because they hold up much better than the plastic ones IMO. The covers come with an integral bonding jumper with a ring terminal that I assume would be bonded if attached to the "ground clip" of a self grounding type receptacle but cannot find any information in the paperwork or U.L. listing info. The existing boxes are PVC. What are your thoughts? What about for snap switches that do not have the grounding clip? Thanks.
Receptacles with Bonding Clips
Yes, you can use the integral bonding jumper on the aluminum in-use cover with self-grounding type receptacles. The ground clip on these receptacles provides a point of attachment for the bonding jumper, ensuring a proper electrical connection.
Snap Switches Without Grounding Clips
No, you cannot use the integral bonding jumper on aluminum in-use covers with snap switches that do not have grounding clips. The absence of a grounding clip means there is no designated point to attach the bonding jumper.
Installation Instructions
Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the aluminum in-use cover. Ensure that the bonding jumper is properly connected to the ground clip on the receptacle or another suitable grounding point within the electrical box. Use a grounding conductor that is sized appropriately for the circuit. Confirm that the installation meets all applicable electrical codes and standards.
Additional Considerations
Choose aluminum covers that are rated for wet locations. This will ensure their durability and protection against moisture. Inspect the PVC boxes for any damage or corrosion. Replace damaged boxes as necessary.* Consider bonding the electrical box to the ground wire of the circuit. This additional bonding measure can enhance electrical safety.
Conclusion:
You can safely use aluminum in-use covers with integral bonding jumpers on self-grounding type receptacles in wet locations. However, you should not use them with snap switches that do not have grounding clips. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and comply with electrical codes for proper installation.
