Question: I not a resi pro., but I've been doing alot lately. I always thought round boxes for lights. I've noticed that the outlet boxes serve just fine for sconces, pendants and smokes. Can I do away with the round box from my stock?

While it is true that outlet boxes can be used for some lighting fixtures, such as scones, pendants, and smoke detectors, it is not recommended to do away with round boxes entirely. Here are a few reasons why: Safety

Round boxes are designed to provide proper support and protection for electrical wiring and connections. They are made of metal, which is more durable and flame-resistant than plastic outlet boxes.

Code compliance

In many areas, electrical codes require the use of round boxes for lighting fixtures. Using outlet boxes instead may not meet code requirements.

Installation

Round boxes are typically easier to install than outlet boxes for lighting fixtures. They are designed to fit snugly between ceiling joists or studs, and they have pre-drilled holes for mounting the fixture.

Aesthetics:
Round boxes are typically more aesthetically pleasing than outlet boxes when used for lighting fixtures. They provide a clean and finished look that complements most fixtures. While outlet boxes may be suitable for some lighting fixtures in certain situations, it is generally recommended to use round boxes for all lighting fixtures to ensure safety, code compliance, ease of installation, and aesthetics.
