Question: can i place a picture over the panel trim. commercial application architect wants to cover panel with picture in frame. picture covers entire panel trim. does the code address this issue?
International Building Code (IBC)Section 2603.2.
1.2 Panel Trim Panel trim shall be placed around the perimeter of all panels and shall extend not less than 1 inch (25 mm) beyond the face of the panel and be not less than 4 inches (102 mm) wide.
Section 1012.5.1 Required Smoke-Detection Systems Smoke detectors shall be installed in accordance with 907.2.1 and 907.
2.2. Smoke detectors shall be located on the ceiling or wall at least 4 inches (102 mm) from any wall or partition, and not less than 6 inches (152 mm) from any light fixture or other obstruction.
Interpretation The IBC does not specifically address the placement of pictures over panel trim. However, the IBC requires smoke detectors to be located at least 4 inches (102 mm) from any wall or partition. If the picture covers the entire panel trim, it could potentially obstruct smoke detectors or other safety devices.
Recommendation Consult with the local building department to determine if the proposed installation meets the requirements of the IBC and any local amendments. Consider using a smaller picture or frame that does not cover the entire panel trim, ensuring that smoke detectors and other safety devices remain unobstructed. Flag for review
