Question: We wanted to install Sq D 200amp MB load center and local inspector told us to choose a different panel because the arc fault circuit breakers size will obstruct the factory neutral bar. Im thinking of installing additional ground bar kit in the load center where it can be accessed without having to remove any circuit breakers to make terminations. Is square d going to change their interior design?
Reasons for Inspector's Concerns
The Sq D 200amp MB load center has a limited amount of space behind the factory neutral bar. When installing arc fault circuit breakers (AFCBs), their larger size can potentially obstruct access to the neutral bar, making it difficult to terminate wires.
Inspector's Recommendation
The local inspector's recommendation to choose a different panel is based on safety concerns. Obstructed access to the neutral bar can increase the risk of loose connections, overheating, and potential electrical hazards.
Alternative Solution: Additional Ground Bar Kit
Your suggestion to install an additional ground bar kit is a potential solution. By adding a ground bar in an accessible location, you can create more space for the AFCBs and ensure easy access to the neutral bar for terminations.
Square D's Response
There is no information currently available to indicate that Square D plans to change the interior design of its 200amp MB load center to accommodate larger AFCBs. However, it is possible that they may introduce a new model or design in the future that addresses this issue.
Recommendation
To ensure compliance with the inspector's requirements and maintain safety standards, it is recommended to consider the following options: Choose a different load center
Select a model that has ample space behind the neutral bar to accommodate AFCBs without obstruction.
Install an additional ground bar kit
Add a dedicated ground bar kit to provide more space for AFCBs and easy access to the neutral bar.*
