Question: Receptacles were installed in a covered exterior patio area, of a dwelling, to operate electric roll down screen panels. There is a dedicated plug in / cord connection from receptacle to screen motor. This is not readily accessable as recept's are 8 ft off floor. Would these be exempt from gfci protection ?
No, these receptacles are not exempt from GFCI protection.According to the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC), all 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in exterior locations must be GFCI protected. This includes receptacles installed in covered outdoor areas, such as patios. The only exceptions to this requirement are for receptacles that are: Only used for landscape lighting Installed in a dedicated space for swimming pools or hot tubs Used for fire pumps Used for irrigation systems* Used for electric vehicle chargingThe receptacles in this case are not used for any of these exceptions, so they must be GFCI protected.
