Question: In the 2003 IBC, were smoke detectors required in a type M occupancy electrical room? Also, I cannot find this: A true fire door, such as a "wondor" brand, one that closes off a fire partition opening, how is it required to be tied to the fire alarm? Ie, must they close in the event of a fire alarm, if they do not have door release service smokes tied to it?

1. Smoke Detectors in Electrical Rooms (Type M Occupancy)

Yes, smoke detectors were required in electrical rooms of Type M occupancies in the 2003 IBC. Specifically, Section 907.5.
2.2 stated:"`Smoke detectors shall be installed in the following locations: ... [f] Electrical rooms, including electrical closets and elevator machine or equipment rooms.`"2. Fire Door Tie-In to Fire Alarm

The 2003 IBC does not explicitly address the requirement for fire doors to be tied into the fire alarm system if they do not have door release service smokes. However, Section 909.2.1(5) states:"`Fire doors shall be provided with switches or other approved means to cause the release of the latch and to open the door when activated by the fire detection system or smoke detectors.`"This provision suggests that fire doors should be tied into the fire alarm system to ensure that they release in the event of a fire. However, it does not specify that this is a mandatory requirement for doors without door release service smokes. Therefore, it is likely that the specific requirements for tying fire doors into the fire alarm system would vary depending on the local jurisdiction and the specific fire code adopted.
