Question: I am trying to purchase bulk quantities of flat 12-3 cable/cord to use for temporary connections similar to entertainment purposes. The only thing that I can find is pre-made flat extension cords. I would like to make custom lengths and terminate the ends myself. Anyone have any ideas? And is there anything wrong with running this cable under carpet for temporary power?

Finding Bulk Flat 12-3 Cable

Electrical Supply Houses

Contact local electrical supply houses that specialize in commercial and industrial electrical supplies. They may have bulk flat 12-3 cable available in large rolls or spools.

Online Retailers

Search for "flat 12-3 cable" or "speaker wire" on online retailers like Amazon, Home Depot, or Grainger Industrial Supply. They may have options for bulk purchase.

Industrial Suppliers

Reach out to industrial suppliers that cater to the electrical industry. They can source hard-to-find electrical materials in bulk quantities.

Making Custom Lengths and Terminating Ends

Electrical Knowledge

You will need basic electrical knowledge to terminate the cable ends properly. If you don't have experience, consult with a qualified electrician.

Tools

Gather the necessary tools, including wire strippers, crimpers, and electrical tape.

Connectors

Choose the appropriate connectors for your application, such as male and female XLR connectors or banana plugs.

Stripping and Crimping

Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to strip the cable ends and crimp the connectors. Ensure that the connections are secure and insulated properly.

Running Under Carpet for Temporary Power

Safety Concerns

Running any type of electrical cable under carpet can pose safety hazards if not done properly. The carpet can trap heat and cause the cable to overheat, potentially leading to a fire.

Code Compliance

In most cases, it is against electrical code to run electrical cables under carpet.

Alternative Solutions

Consider using temporary cable ramps or mats to protect the cable from foot traffic and provide a safe pathway.

Recommended Practices

Use Heavy-Duty Cable

Choose a flat 12-3 cable rated for the intended load.

Avoid Sharp Bends

Handle the cable carefully and avoid making sharp bends that can damage the conductors.

Secure the Cable

Use zip ties or other methods to secure the cable to a sturdy surface, preventing it from moving around and becoming a tripping hazard.

Monitor the Cable:
Regularly inspect the cable for damage or overheating. If any issues are detected, disconnect the power and repair the cable or replace it immediately. Flag for review
