Question: I work for a utility and they are telling me that all I need for Arc Flash rating is a cal. 4 for voltages under 1000v and cal. 8 for voltages above 1000 volts. Doesnt the rating change with clearing times of relays? I thought the lower voltages have higher arc flash hzards. I brought this up to safety members and they did not agree

Arc Flash Hazard Rating

The arc flash hazard rating is determined by the following factors: Voltage

Higher voltages generally result in higher arc flash hazards.

Clearing Time

The shorter the clearing time, the lower the arc flash hazard.

Incident Energy

The amount of energy released in an arc flash incident, measured in calories per square centimeter (cal/cm²).

Voltage vs. Arc Flash Hazard

While it is true that higher voltages generally have higher arc flash hazards, the relationship is not straightforward. The clearing time of the protective devices plays a significant role.
Voltages Below 1000V

For voltages below 1000V, the arc flash hazard can be significant, especially for short clearing times. Using cal. 4 PPE for all voltages below 1000V may not be adequate protection in all cases.

Voltages Above 1000V

For voltages above 1000V, the arc flash hazard is typically higher due to the increased energy stored in the system. However, long clearing times can reduce the hazard, allowing for a lower PPE rating.

Effect of Clearing Time

The clearing time of the protective devices is a critical factor in determining the arc flash hazard. The shorter the clearing time, the lower the incident energy released in an arc flash incident.
Short Clearing Times

Short clearing times limit the duration of the arc flash, reducing the incident energy. This results in a lower arc flash hazard rating.

Long Clearing Times

Long clearing times allow the arc flash incident to develop fully, releasing more energy. This results in a higher arc flash hazard rating.

Recommendations

To ensure proper protection from arc flash hazards, it is important to consider the following:
Conduct an Arc Flash Hazard Analysis

This analysis will help determine the specific arc flash hazard rating for each location based on the voltage, clearing time, and other factors.

Select Appropriate PPE

The PPE rating should be based on the results of the arc flash hazard analysis. It is important to not underestimate the hazard rating, as this could result in inadequate protection.

Train Employees:
Employees should be trained on the arc flash hazards and the proper use of PPE.In your case, it is advisable to consult with a qualified electrical engineer or arc flash specialist to conduct a proper arc flash hazard analysis and provide specific recommendations for PPE. Flag for review
