Question: The following are pictures of a recently installed OS at double the rating for ballasts. I burned up 4 of these at $125 a pop. Seems to me there should be some kind of internal protection from fire if idiots like me can't follow simple instructions. Beware.

Warning

Incorrectly installing or operating an overhead projector (OHP) can pose a severe fire hazard. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe installation and use.

Cause of the Fire

Based on the provided information, it appears that the fire was caused by using ballasts with a higher wattage rating than intended for the projector. This resulted in excessive electrical current flowing through the ballasts, causing them to overheat and ignite.

Safety Features and Protections

Most OHPs come with internal safety features to prevent fires in the event of incorrect installation or misuse. These features include:

Thermal Fuse

If the ballast overheats, the thermal fuse will blow, interrupting the electrical circuit and preventing further heating.

Overvoltage Protection

Some OHPs have built-in protection against power surges and overvoltage, which can damage the ballast and cause a fire.

User Responsibility

While safety features are essential, it is the ultimate responsibility of the user to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Failure to do so can void the warranty and pose a significant safety hazard.

Recommendations

Always consult the projector's user manual for specific installation and operating instructions. Use only ballasts with the correct wattage rating for the projector. Ensure that the projector is properly grounded to prevent electrical shocks. Never block the projector's ventilation ports or place objects on top of it.* If the projector malfunctions or exhibits any unusual behavior, discontinue use immediately and contact a qualified technician.

Conclusion:

While overhead projectors typically have built-in safety features, it is crucial for users to follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure safe operation and prevent potential fire hazards. Flag for review
