Question: Background info-I am trying to figure out how to operate a satellite terminal off of commercial shore power in a warehouse. The terminal typically uses a 7.5K or 10K generator, but the customer wants to make life easier. The terminal has 2, 120 volt lines, a neutral, and a ground. The warehouse has 120/208 line coming in. I am going to refer them to an electrician, but I would like to explain what is needed to make this happen. Take it easy on me, I have only taken basic electronics and deal with mostly RF theory and equipment operation.
Transformer Setup
To convert the 120/208V line voltage from the warehouse to the 120V required by the terminal, you will need a transformer. A 208V to 120V transformer will step down the voltage to the appropriate level. The transformer should be rated for the wattage of the satellite terminal (7.5kW or 10kW).
Wiring Configuration
The transformer will have two primary terminals (208V) and two secondary terminals (120V). The primary terminals should be connected to the 208V line coming from the warehouse. The secondary terminals should be connected to the two 120V lines and the neutral from the satellite terminal. The ground from the satellite terminal should be connected to the ground from the warehouse.
Power Distribution
Once the transformer is installed and wired, the 120V power will be distributed to the satellite terminal through the two 120V lines. The neutral and ground will provide the necessary return paths for electrical current.
Other Considerations
The electrician should verify that the warehouse has sufficient amperage available to power the satellite terminal. Surge protection and grounding are important to protect the equipment from electrical surges and damage. Proper ventilation around the transformer is essential to prevent overheating.
Benefits of Using Shore Power: Eliminates the need for a generator, reducing noise, maintenance, and fuel costs. Provides a more stable and reliable power source.* Makes it easier to set up and relocate the satellite terminal. Flag for review
