Question: I drilled a few holes in concrete walls for a friend doing cabling. Inch and 1/2 holes. After 1st hole & creating so much dust, I came up with a better idea. I started my hole a bit, cut the top off a kitty litter jug & taped it to the wall, mouth of jug outward, lower end lightly taped, allowing for movement.Set bottom of jug on floor, close under the other part. As I drilled, the dust/grit dropped easily in the shield. Every 1 or 2 minutes, I pulled out on the bottom & it fell to the bottom. Had paper on floors too, roll the dust w paper & discard. This worked great. A quick sweep or vaccuum cleaned up well.

Innovative Dust Mitigation Technique for Concrete Drilling

To minimize dust and grit while drilling holes in concrete walls, a clever method was devised using a kitty litter jug.

Procedure

1.

Initiate Hole

Begin drilling a small hole to create a starting point.2.

Create Dust Shield

Cut the top off a plastic kitty litter jug and tape it to the wall around the hole, with the mouth of the jug facing outward.3.

Secure Jug

Tape the lower end of the jug lightly to allow for some movement.4.

Position Jug

Place the bottom of the jug on the floor, directly beneath the hole.5.

Drill and Collect Dust

As drilling progresses, the dust and grit fall into the shield and settle in the bottom of the jug.6.

Empty Regularly

Every 1-2 minutes, carefully pull out on the bottom of the jug to release the collected dust.7.

Protect Flooring

Place paper on the floors to catch any falling dust. Roll up the paper and discard.

Results:

This technique significantly reduced dust and kept the work area clean. A quick sweep or vacuuming easily removed any remaining dust. Flag for review
