Question: Residential customer has requested a floor outlet in his office. Flooring is carpet. I have access from below only through a can light on the first story.Any advice on cutting the carpet out? I plan on using a single gang box. I was thinking razor knife, sciccors, and to go very slow. Just looking for any tricks from someone who has done this before.

Cutting the Carpet for a Floor Outlet

Tools you'll need

Razor knife with a sharp blade Carpet seam roller Straight edge (ruler or level) Scissors Duct tape

Steps

1.

Mark the Outlet Location

Use a pencil or chalk to mark the exact location of the floor outlet on the carpet.2.

Use a Straight Edge

Place a straight edge along one side of the marked square. Use a razor knife to carefully cut the carpet along the straight edge.3.

Make Two Parallel Cuts

Repeat the process on the opposite side of the marked square to create two parallel cuts.4.

Connect the Cuts

Use scissors to carefully cut the carpet between the two parallel cuts, connecting them to form a square.5.

Roll the Edges

Use a carpet seam roller to roll the edges of the cut carpet inward, creating a clean and flush edge.6.

Cut the Foam Underlayment

Once the carpet is cut, access the foam underlayment below. Use a razor knife to carefully cut the underlayment in the same shape as the carpet cutout.7.

Secure the Carpet

Use duct tape to secure the edges of the carpet cutout to the floor, making sure it lies flat and flush.

Tips:
Go slowly and take your time to avoid any accidents. Use a sharp blade and replace it regularly to ensure clean cuts. If the carpet is thick or plush, it may be helpful to cut through the top layer of carpet only, then carefully remove the backing material. Be careful not to damage the electrical wiring below. Once the outlet is installed, you can use a furniture cover or rug to conceal the floor outlet and prevent tripping hazards. Flag for review
