Question: I dont have the 2011 NEC in front of me but can anyone tell me or explain to me the requirements of section 110.16 in the new 2011 code? In the 2008 version of the code the section required panels, enclosures, etc.. to be field marked or labeled with a generic label warning of an Arc Flash hazard but did not require this label to have specifics such as the amnount of Incident Energy, Specific Flash Boundary, or Category that you find on lablels produced from an AF study.I thought I overheard someone saying that the new 2011 code required specific Arc Flash labels on equipment with specific information as a result of an AF study. Can anyone verify this or explain what is required in the 2011 code? Thanks
Yes, the 2011 NEC Section 110.16 still requires field marking or labeling of panels, enclosures, etc. with a generic label warning of an Arc Flash hazard. However, there is an Informational Note that provides guidance on the additional information that may be included on the label. This guidance includes the amount of Incident Energy, Specific Flash Boundary, or Category that you find on labels produced from an Arc Flash study. The Informational Note states that "The label may be placed on the equipment or enclosure itself or in close proximity to the equipment or enclosure. The label shall be of sufficient size and visibility to alert personnel to the hazard and shall include the following:"- "Arc Flash Hazard";- "Do not enter the Flash Protection Boundary";- "Consult the Facility Management for specific work instructions"; and- "The date the risk assessment was performed."The Informational Note also states that "Additional information, such as the Arc Flash Boundary, Incident Energy, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required, may also be included on the label."So, while the 2011 NEC does not require specific Arc Flash labels on equipment with specific information as a result of an AF study, it does allow for this information to be included on the label.
