Question: I have a 600 amp single phase meter base that will feed 3 - 200 Amp breaker boxes. The 3 panels will be indoors. 2 of the 3 panels will be fed from the back of the 600 amp meter base. My question is what is the best way to feed the 3rd panel from the meter base? A gutter or LB?
In this scenario, using a gutter is generally considered the preferred method to feed the third panel from the meter base.
Advantages of using a gutter
Safety
Gutters provide a fully enclosed and protected raceway for the conductors, eliminating the risk of accidental contact or damage.
Durability
Gutters are typically made of sturdy materials like aluminum or steel, providing long-term reliability.
Flexibility
Gutters allow for easy rerouting or expansion of the electrical system in the future.
Cost-effectiveness
Compared to other methods, gutters offer a cost-effective solution for distributing power from the meter base to multiple panels.
Installation
1. Install the gutter on the exterior of the building, ensuring proper slope for drainage.
2. Route the conductors from the meter base through the gutter and into the third panel.3. Use appropriate connectors and fittings to make secure connections at both ends.
Alternatives to using a gutter
LB
While it is possible to use a liquid-tight LB (locknut) to feed the third panel, it is less desirable due to limited flexibility and potential corrosion issues.
Conduit: Running conduit underground or overhead can be more expensive and labor-intensive than using a gutter.Based on the factors discussed above, using a gutter is generally the recommended and most practical method to feed the third panel from the 600 amp meter base in this scenario.
