Question: My understanding is that a gas range can be on the small appliance circuit to supply clock, timer, lights, etc. Is the range hood considered part of the range and/or can it be on the small appliance circuit as well?I have read a lengthy (closed) thread where a dedicated circuit for it is not required but recommended by many because of possible microwave hood. However we are installing a stainless designer hood $800 value so no one is swapping it out for microwave (plus we have dedicated spot & circuit for microwave elsewhere). We are on NEC2008 here and so it must be AFCI then? GFCI? Either way we don't want the extra expense (and before you say it, no we did not pay that much for the hood just got an amazing deal--so money is an object!)
Range Hood
The range hood is not considered part of the range. It is a separate appliance that requires its own dedicated circuit.
Small Appliance Circuit
The small appliance circuit is intended for small appliances such as: Toasters Coffee makers Blenders Slow cookersIt is not typically used for larger appliances like range hoods or gas ranges.
NFPA 70 (NEC 2008)
According to NEC 2008, neither AFCI nor GFCI protection is required for range hoods. However, some local codes may have additional requirements.
Recommended Practice
It is generally recommended to install a dedicated circuit for the range hood, especially if it is a high-powered model. This helps prevent circuit overloads and ensures proper operation of the hood.
Cost Considerations
The cost of installing a dedicated circuit will vary depending on the complexity of the job. If you are able to do the work yourself, the cost will be minimal. If you need to hire an electrician, the cost could be several hundred dollars.
Conclusion
While a dedicated circuit is not required for a range hood in NEC 2008, it is recommended. If cost is a concern, you may want to consider using the small appliance circuit for the clock, timer, and lights of the gas range, but install a dedicated circuit for the range hood. Flag for review
