Question: I have a builder who wants me to mount a recessed can in an attic access hole. This would be a old work 6" can. I do think this will violate the NEC but I can not find the code reference to quote him.
National Electrical Code (NEC) Reference
Article 300.22(C)(3):"Flush-mounted recessed luminaires shall not be supported by the ceiling."Explanation
This code requirement prohibits mounting recessed cans in attic access holes because the attic access hole does not provide sufficient support for the recessed can. The recessed can must be supported by the framing of the structure.
Consequences of Violation
Electrical hazard
The recessed can could fall out of the attic access hole, creating a safety hazard and potentially damaging electrical equipment.
Fire hazard
The recessed can could overheat and ignite combustible materials in the attic.
Building code violation
Failure to comply with the NEC can result in failing a building inspection or a violation notice.
Recommend to the Builder: Mount the recessed can in a location where it is supported by framing.* If it is essential to have a light in the attic access hole, use a surface-mounted fixture that does not require cutting into the ceiling. Flag for review
