Question: We are installing post lights on a pool deck. do these lights need to be grounded to the grounding grid along with the wet nich underwater lights? is there a certain type of junction box required in a pool area to make taps and grounds/bonds in?

Grounding Requirements for Post Lights

Yes, post lights installed on a pool deck must be grounded to the grounding grid, just like the wet niche underwater lights. This is to ensure electrical safety in the event of a fault.

Type of Junction Box

In a pool area, a weatherproof junction box with a grounding screw is required to make taps and grounds/bonds. This type of junction box is designed to protect the electrical connections from moisture and potential submersion.

Specific Requirements for Post Lights

The post lights should be equipped with a ground wire. The ground wire should be connected to the grounding screw in the weatherproof junction box. The grounding grid for the pool should be made of solid copper or stainless steel. The connection between the post lights and the grounding grid should be made using corrosion-resistant fittings.

Additional Considerations:
The electrical work should be performed by a qualified electrician. All electrical components, including junction boxes, wires, and fittings, should be rated for use in outdoor and wet locations.* The post lights should be installed at least 10 feet away from the pool edge to prevent accidental contact with water.
