Question: I am inspecting an existing swimming pool. The concrete perimeter surface surrounding the pool has been removed in order to expose a trench with a leaky gas line to be repaired. The gas supplies the pool's water heater. In the ground around and near to the pool are several #8 AWG stranded wires. I imagine one end of these wires bond to the structural reinforcing steel of the pool shell further below ground. The visible ends most likely were connected to the rebar or the welded wire mesh of the perimeter surface. The perimeter surface will be poured in concrete soon.Because solid wire only is permitted by existing code to bond pool to grid, how can this bonding issue be easily resolved? Thanks
To resolve the bonding issue and comply with the code requirement for solid wire bonding, you can consider the following steps:1. Remove the Stranded Wires
Cut and remove the existing #8 AWG stranded wires from the trench.2.
Install Solid #8 AWG Bonding Wire
Run solid #8 AWG copper wire from the pool's structural reinforcing steel to the electrical panel or grounding electrode system. Ensure the wire is protected from damage using a conduit or trench.3.
Connect to Pool Shell
Tie the solid copper wire securely to the exposed structural reinforcing steel of the pool shell.4.
Bond to Perimeter Surface
Once the perimeter surface is poured, expose the end of the solid bonding wire and connect it to a new #8 AWG solid copper wire that will be embedded in the perimeter surface. Ensure proper electrical connections using split bolts or crimp connectors.5.
Verify Continuity
Test the continuity between the structural reinforcing steel, the solid bonding wire, and the electrical panel or grounding electrode system to verify proper bonding.
Note: If the existing structural reinforcing steel of the pool shell is not accessible, you may consider installing a new dedicated grounding rod or plate near the pool and bonding it to the solid copper wire. Flag for review
