Question: I dont understand how Verizon Fios can offer a POTS line if its a fiber to the premise network.
Verizon Fios, even though it's a fiber to the premise (FTTP) network, offers a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) line through a technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Here's an explanation
Fiber to the Premise (FTTP):
FTTP networks use fiber optic cables to deliver data, including internet, TV, and phone services. Fiber optic cables transmit data using light signals, providing high-speed and low-latency connections.
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
VoIP converts analog voice signals into digital data packets. These data packets are transmitted over the internet or any IP-based network. At the receiving end, the data packets are converted back to analog voice signals.
Verizon Fios POTS
Verizon Fios offers POTS lines over its FTTP network using VoIP technology. The POTS line is provided through an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is installed at the customer's premises. The ONT converts the fiber optic signal into electrical signals and provides a standard RJ-11 jack for the POTS line.
Advantages of VoIP POTS
Cost-effective
VoIP POTS is often more cost-effective than traditional POTS lines.
Features
VoIP POTS can offer additional features such as caller ID, voicemail, and call forwarding.
Mobility
VoIP POTS is not tied to a physical location. Customers can use their POTS line anywhere they have an IP-based connection.
Limitations of VoIP POTS
Power dependency
VoIP POTS requires electricity to operate. In the event of a power outage, the POTS line may not function.
Internet connectivity
VoIP POTS relies on an active internet connection. If the internet connection is lost, the POTS line will be unavailable.
Latency: VoIP POTS can experience occasional latency, which may impact the quality of voice calls.Overall, Verizon Fios is able to offer POTS lines over its FTTP network by utilizing VoIP technology. This allows customers to enjoy the benefits of a fiber-optic connection while still maintaining a traditional POTS line for voice communication. Flag for review
